Settlement Support

CASEWORK

A caseworker is available to see clients to provide information, advocacy, support and referral for people who have arrived in Australia in the past 5 years. Where specialist assistance is needed clients will be assisted to make appointments and connect with the relevant specialist service.

Availability of Workers

St Albans Office
Workers are available to see clients Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1.30 until 4.00pm. No appointment is necessary for these times.

A settlement worker is available to see clients, assess needs, and provide assistance, information or referral on any issue with the exception of immigration matters.

Hume Office
A duty service operates from Mon - Friday mornings
Immigration advice is by appointment only

Eligibility
The Settlement Programs are targeted to people who have been in Australia for less than 5 years and who arrived under the Humanitarian Program or Family Migration with low English Proficiency

Geographic Boundaries
Casework is available to people from Brimbank, Melton and Hume, local government areas.

The Men's Settlement Program also includes casework for people from Maribyrnong.

SETTLEMENT SUPPORT GROUPS

The MRC North West Runs several settlement support groups which have a focus on bringing people together, sharing skills and information and developing a improved understanding of the Australian Society in a social and supportive environment. Activities are planned with the groups and have a settlement focus. The groups run during school terms.

  • Refugee Youth Orientation & Recreational Program
  • Refugee Youth Holiday Program
  • Lunch Time New Arrivals Program  St Albans Secondary College
  • East Timorese Settlement Support Group
  • Men's Settlement Program
  • Youth Programs are run in collaboration with Good Shepard Youth and Family Service

Independent Groups
The MRC NW also has contact with a number of independent groups which meet for social and settlement support. We are able to provide contact details for these groups

IMMIGRATION ADVICE

Description
Registered Migration Agents are available to provide Immigration Advice to clients who have been in Australia for less than 5 years. Advice is only provided in the areas of Humanitarian and family migration.

Immigration forms can be downloaded from the DIMA website   www.immi.gov.au or can be obtained from the MRC North West offices. Clients who need assistance determining which visa they should apply for should speak to a Migration Agent prior to requesting forms.

Our Migration Agents will assist clients to undertake the application process and will provide an assessment of the appropriateness of an application.

Our work does not include Immigration Appeals.

Migration agents are available to assist people with immigration matters.

St.Albans
The MRC NW operates a migration service every Monday and Thursday morning from 9.30am until 12 noon. No appointments are necessary.

Hume
Migration Advice is available 3 days per week by appointment.

Group Sessions
Migration Agents are also able to provide group information sessions regarding Humanitarian and Family applications processes.

SETTLEMENT INFORMATION SESSIONS

Settlement Staff can provide community information sessions on a range of key topics. We work in collaboration with a range of agencies and services to provide information to Newly Arrived Communities.

Settlement Information sessions are delivered by team members. Sessions can be provided to :

YOUTH SETTLEMENT PROGRAM

The Youth Settlement worker is located at the St Albans site and provides settlement support to young people (12 - 25) who have arrived in Australia within the last 5 years under the Humanitarian program. The youth worker also provides support and advice to agencies, services and schools who are working with Newly arrived young people

Programs for Young People

Refugee Youth Orientation and Recreation programs
These programs run Mondays and Thursdays with a group of between 8 to 10 young people. The program combines recreational activities chosen by the young people with settlement information and opportunities to share settlement experiences.

Lunch time New Arrivals program
The youth worker is available at St Albans Secondary College on a weekly basis to provide settlement support for young people.

Holiday Program
A holiday program is arranged in conjunction with local youth services to introduce newly arrived young people to activities available in the area.

Eligibility
Young people who have arrived under the Humanitarian program within the past 5 years. The Young person must live or attend school in the Brimbank or Melton area.

Service Provider support

Migrant And Refugee Youth Subcommittee

The Youth worker also facilitates and resources the Migrant and Refugee Youth Subcommittee which is a network of service providers working with migrant and Refugee youth. The network enables the development of joint programs and strategies in working with migrant and refugee and has enabled the coordination of training and development opportunities within the area.

Secondary Consultation
Our Youth Worker is able to provide advice and support to services or agencies working with recently arrived Migrant and Refugee Youth.

Service providers who target newly arrived young people in the area of Brimbank and Melton.

MEN'S SETTLEMENT SUPPORT

The Men's Settlement Support Program is located in St Albans and provides settlement support to Men who have arrived under the Humanitarian program within the last 5 years. The program includes casework and group work and is able to provide information, advice and link clients into specialist services and social support opportunities within the local area. A weekly group program operates with settlement activities determined by the group members.
